What Is Clean Truck Check?
Clean Truck Check (CTC) is California's required emissions inspection and maintenance program for heavy-duty vehicles over 14,000 lbs GVWR. It ensures trucks, buses, and fleets comply with state air quality standards.
If your vehicle operates in California—even if registered in another state—CTC likely applies.
Covered Vehicles Include:
Diesel and alternative-fuel trucks
School, shuttle, and transit buses
Commercial hybrids
Government fleet vehicles
California-registered motorhomes
Do Any Vehicles Qualify for Exemption?
Yes. The following are not subject to Clean Truck Check:
Battery-electric and hydrogen vehicles
Tactical military vehicles
Emergency and historical vehicles
Motorhomes registered out-of-state
Engines certified to the cleanest NOx standard (exempt until 2027)

What’s Happening Now?
CARB began enforcement in January 2023 using roadside emissions monitoring. If your vehicle is flagged, you’ll receive a Notice to Submit to Testing (NST).
From October 1, 2024, emissions testing will be required for compliance deadlines on or after January 1, 2025. Vehicles must pass and submit a certified test within the required timeframe.
Who Can Perform Testing?
